It’s material that we have been using since we decided to move out of caves. Wood is still a large part of the construction industry even to this day. There are many reasons for this and whilst we no longer use it for the main outside walls, that is now the job of brick, breezeblock or even prefabricated concrete, wood remains a prominent part of the construct. What are the best trees to use for this purpose?
At the end of the day you have to go with the old oak tree. It’s a mighty tree to choose! Mature oaks can reach huge sizes in girth and in height. They are thick and hard to feel but when you do the amount of yield of wood is tremendous. Oak is easy to treat and this means that additives such as varnish, paint and anti moisture protectors can be added. Oak is, in itself, resistant to moisture and mould anyway.
It is also incredibly hardy and strong. It’s no wonder the Royal Navy wanted it to build our fleet for the Napoleonic Wars. Cannon balls were said to bounce off it! Imagine that strength being added to your home when you have a company like timberpride install their Oak Trusses in your home. It’s safe to say, I think, that you’ll be pretty sure that the roof is going nowhere for many decades to come.
