How to Clean Chrome Wheels and Trims

Your chrome wheels and trims will look as good as new with this step-by-step cleaning process.

Pre-Washing

Most chrome wheels and trims are not solid chrome, but have had hard chrome plating applied by experts such as poeton.co.uk/advanced-treatments/apticote-100-hard-chrome.

Before you start cleaning chrome wheels and trims, it’s important to prepare the workspace. Start by parking the vehicle in a shaded area. This not only means you are working on cool-to-touch chrome but also prevents water spots. It’s also essential to do an initial rinse. This will not only make the washing step easier, but can remove any debris that might cause damage to the chrome during washing.

Washing

To start washing all you need is a dedicated car shampoo, water and a microfibre mitt. Begin at the top, working your way down and spend extra time in nooks and crannies where grime and dirt tend to collect. You can use a small soft brush, but be sure the bristles are not too hard as this may damage the surface. Then, rinse all over again.

Post-Washing

After rinsing use a soft microfibre towel to pat down all areas. Next, carefully apply a chrome polish using a microfibre pad. Start by hazing the polish in with soft, circular movements, and then by buffing it. Finally, apply a wax sealant in the same way you applied the polish.

Be sure to use fresh, clean wipes and towels for each step in the process, as well as clean, warm water for washing and clean cold water for rinsing.
