So great is Cheltenham’s popularity, that it seems that it is not just the living that it appeals too. The pretty Cheltenham village of Prestbury is known to be one of the most haunted places in the UK – so the ghosts are also seemingly at home here too! Here are just a few of the notorious spooks that are said to haunt Prestbury…
The Black Abbott – This is probably the most famous of Prestburys ghosts. This dark spectre is believed to be a monk that died here during the time of Henry VIII during the dissolution of the monasteries in England. Many have seen the ghostly figure lurking around the church in Prestbury and there are certain days when it is believed to be much more likely to spot him – commonly Easter and Christmas. The spirit seems to follow the same route every time walking past the priory and through the graveyard, always then disappearing into a wall of a cottage on the Hight Street. Spooky stuff!
The Burgage – This street in Prestbury is known as one of the most paranormally active streets. It is the place where there was a lot of civil war activity between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians, and the ghost that is said to be often heard here is believed to be that of a Royalist soldier, caught riding his horse down the street and was executed right here. Many have reported to have heard the sound of horse’s hooves galloping down the Burgage at night…
Sundial Cottage – This pretty cottage is also home to a ghostly resident – that of a young girl, whom little is known about, other that she was thought to have lived here around the 17th Century. This is a guess based on the fact that the instrument that she is heard playing is called a spinet, which was popular around then. Many people who have lived in and visited the cottage have seen her appearing in various rooms of the house but have also reported her music coming from around the house too.
