According to new data, the most in-demand workers within the UK construction industry are builders. A staggering 141,000 vacancies are currently active for the role, and there are more than 51,000 builder jobs being advertised right now.

Alongside builders, there remains a huge demand for electricians, plumbers, flooring contractors, and gas engineers. All of this data has been collated by metals4U, who combed through various online job sites before compiling the data into raw figures.
These jobs are vital, yet the number of individuals qualified to carry them out is dwindling. Demand is only expected to increase, potentially resulting in a need for over 60,000 builders by 2032.
Jobs commonly stall because of this shortage in qualified workers, and with more houses needing to be built, a career in any of the aforementioned roles will likely become more enticing. Nothing is announced yet, but schemes to encourage new workers in the roles may arise should numbers continue to drop.
Locations
The shortage becomes even more intriguing when we look at the areas most affected. For instance, when we look at the number of vacancies for builders in the UK by city, we can see where the demand is highest.
London, unsurprisingly, leads the pack, with nearly 14,000 vacancies alone. The top five continues with Manchester’s 2,700, Birmingham and Bristol’s tied 1,909, and finally Leeds’s 1,500 vacancies. Liverpool is the next city with over 1,000 vacancies, with the rest – Glasgow, Leicester, Edinburgh, and Sheffield – all floating between the high 800s and 900s.
