Are all genders treated with equality in sport? And are women and men treated the same when it comes to the field of sports journalism?

ToggleWomen’s sports are advancing in the media – this is clear from some of the recent successes in football and rugby. However, would these sports be as visible if it weren’t for their victories? After all, the public can be fickle and support those teams who are excelling and refuse to engage with those who are not performing at their best.
That said, though there are more male-oriented sports in the media, we can only embrace the positive change that is beginning to take place and hope that, for the sake of the women working tirelessly in their sport, they get equal recognition with males in sports news coverage.
While things are improving for female sportspeople, it’s not quite the same story for female journalists. A recent study showed that a staggering 95% of sports-related articles published were written by men, with the few remaining percent mainly being articles about female sports written by females. So why is it that female journalists seemingly can’t write about men’s sports?
