Earlier life
Namath grew up in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and attended the University of Alabama, leading them to a national championship during his junior year. After initially signing with both the NFL and AFL in 1965, Namath played only five games with the New York Jets before being sidelined with a knee injury. The following year, he became the regular starting quarterback for the Jets and led them to an upset victory over his former team, the Baltimore Colts, in Super Bowl III on January 12th, 1969. Joe Namath made an immediate impact as a professional football player, as he was named AFL Rookie of the Year in 1965 and then earned NFL MVP honors in 1966. In 1967, during his first season as the starting quarterback for the New York Jets, Joe Namath led them to their first winning record in four years. Namath played a total of 13 seasons with the Jets and later went on to play for the Los Angeles Rams before retiring from professional football in 1977. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985.

In January of 2014, Joe Namath suffered a serious stroke in his home and was hospitalized in New York shortly after that.
